Microsoft SharePoint is a powerful platform for collaboration and document management. However, you may occasionally encounter a site you don’t have permission to access. This guide provides a simple, step-by-step process to request access to a SharePoint site when needed.
Requirements
- A device with internet access
- A supported web browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Safari)
- A Microsoft 365 account with access to your organization’s SharePoint environment
- The SharePoint URL or access to your organization’s SharePoint home page
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to Your SharePoint Home Page
- Open your web browser.
- Go to your organization’s SharePoint home page or enter the specific SharePoint site URL if you have it.

)
Step 2: Locate the Site You Need
- From the SharePoint home page, browse or search for the site you need access to.
- Click the site name or link.
Step 3: Request Access
- If you do not have permission, you will see a message stating: “You need permission to access this site.”
- Click the Request Access button.
- In the message field, type a short explanation for your request (e.g., “I need access to the Marketing site to collaborate on a campaign.”).

- Click Send Request.
- Your request will be submitted to the site owner or administrator for review.
Step 4: Wait for Approval
- The site owner will review your request and determine whether access can be granted.
- You will receive an email notification once your access has been approved or denied.
- If your request is denied, you may receive additional guidance or alternative options for accessing the needed information.
Step 5: Try Accessing the Site Again
- Once approved, go back to the SharePoint site and try accessing it again.

✅ Verify your account: Ensure you are signed in with your official work Microsoft 365 account—not a personal account.
✅ Be specific: Provide a clear and concise reason when requesting access to help the approver understand your needs.
