Basic Troubleshooting Before Calling ALPHA IT

PURPOSE
To guide customers through basic troubleshooting steps that can be performed prior to contacting IT Support, ensuring minor issues are resolved quickly, thereby reducing downtime.
SCOPE
This SOP applies to all customers using computer systems who experience technical issues.
PROCEDURE
Step 1: Restart Your Computer
- Save all open work to prevent data loss.
- Close all applications and programs.
- Restart your computer by clicking on the Start menu, selecting Power, and then choosing Restart (or Shutdown and then manually restarting).
Step 2: Check Power and Connections
- Ensure your computer and monitor are plugged in and turned on.
- Verify all cables (power, network, peripherals) are securely connected.
- If using a laptop, ensure it is adequately charged and/or connected to a power source.
Step 3: Internet Connectivity
- Confirm that your network cable is plugged in (for wired connections).
- Check if Wi-Fi is enabled and connected to the appropriate network.
- If you're working from home or alone at the office, consider restarting your router/modem by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in. Please be aware that if other people are working in the office at the time, this action will cause a temporary disruption in their internet connection.
- Try connecting another device (e.g., smartphone) to the internet to see if the issue is with your computer or the network.
Step 4: Check for Error Messages
- Note any error messages that appear on your screen.
- Write down the exact wording of the error message for future reference.
Step 5: Reset Software
- If a particular application is causing issues, close the application and reopen it.
Step 6: Document the issue
- Write down what the issue is, when it started, and what steps you have already taken to troubleshoot it.
- Take screenshots if possible to provide additional context.
Step 7: Contact ALPHA IT
- If the issue persists after completing these troubleshooting steps, contact ALPHA IT Support. Provide us with the details you documented, including any error messages and the steps you have taken.
